Blessing Ceremony for Our Daughter | Quinceañera

0Shares

Fifteen years ago, a daughter was born into our family. We named her Shawna, which means “The Lord is Gracious.” We love her dearly, ensuring that she is provided for and protected. Then, the pandemic happened and everything became a blur, including struggling with her scoliosis. This month, we realized that our firstborn is no longer a child but now a young lady. We wanted to send her to the next chapter of her life, full of blessing and support. So we held a birthday celebration and blessing ceremony in her honor, attended by family, godparents, and some friends.

Bat Barakah (Jewish) or Quinceañera (Mexican)?

When Shawna was younger, hubby and I had already considered holding Bat Barakah, a Jewish rite of passage for 13-year-old girls. But since her 13th birthday happened in 2021 during the pandemic, we didn’t hold a public gathering. Instead, we had lunch with immediate family members and prayed for her.

We thought this year’s birthday was a good time to hold the celebration. In Mexico and other Latin American countries, they would hold the Quinceañera for their 15-year-old daughter. Our is nothing cultural, just timely. The main purpose is to bless our daughter.

We didn’t buy new outfits for the party. I am glad that what we already had in our closet achieved this aesthetic because it is so classic. Achi’s gown is pre-loved and thrifted– something I bartered for a few cans of sardines and luncheon meat during the pandemic. That’s sustainable fashion.

Our Daughter Shawna

Having lived with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) all my life, I never thought that I could still bear a child. But going into the second year of our marriage, I just suddenly learned that I was pregnant. It was a joyful moment, but it was also a time of great uncertainty.

Nevertheless, we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ so we have trusted Him for wisdom, guidance, protection, and provision.

Time flies so fast and now, Shawna is already 15 years old! What a lovely young lady, full of talent and potential, she has turned into. She is still homeschooled for Level 8 while we are still considering what to do for her next level.

Ptr. Rhia Mora of Every Nation holds the blessing ceremony.

The Blessing Ceremony

We had little time to prepare, but in a short time, Ptr. Rhia Mora of Every Nation helped us with the blessing ceremony. It was nothing grand and we only had a few guests, but our young lady went home happy and blessed to be joined by the people who were with us from the start.

  • BIBLE – MAMA
This Bible is a reminder to keep God’s Word as a central part of your life. (Psalm 119:105) “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” May this Bible guide you all the days of your life.
  • TIARA – DADDY
The Tiara symbolizes that you are a “princess” before God and the world; you can triumph over childhood and have the ability to face the challenges ahead. It is also a reminder of the greater crown that Christ will place on your head one day in Heaven.

  • WRISTWATCH – MAMA
The Watch represents being aware of time and the events in your life. It is a reminder that life is short and that you need to make the most of every second. Make your days count.
  • ATM – MAMA
We also entrust your first ATM card that is no longer your kiddie bank account—a symbol for money. May you be guided with God’s wisdom as you spread your wings, earn money, save and grow your wealth. May you use money in a prudent, God-pleasing way.
  • PURITY RING – PAPA
The Ring symbolizes purity. It represents your commitment to a life of sexual purity, and is to be worn as a reminder until the day you are married.

They say that the firstborn daughter usually looks like the Dad. I know, she’s the laser copy of her Dad, that is why I always say hubby would look good in makeup. hahaha

Oaths

Shawna, God calls us to purity, not because He wants to make our lives more difficult, but because He wants to make our lives better.

So today, Shawna, you are taking this ring as a symbol of perfect unity with Jesus. It is given to you as a gift by Papa and Mama, who love you very much, and will support you in this commitment.

Every time you look at your hand, may this ring be a reminder of your commitment to purity and that true love waits. This is not just a gift for you, but also a gift you are giving to your future husband by saving yourself for him and him alone on your wedding night.

Mama’s Prayer

Heavenly Father, I pray for my daughter’s faith to be steadfast and unwavering. Strengthen her belief in You, Lord, and may she find refuge in Your Word. Grant her the courage to face life’s challenges with a faith that overcomes them.

Guard her from all harm, seen and unseen. Place a hedge of protection around her, shielding her from negative influences, accidents, and any form of danger. Keep her safe from the snares of this world and lead her away from paths that may lead to harm.

Her birth made me a mum.

Please bless her with wisdom, discernment, and the courage to make choices that honor you and keep her safe. Grant her the strength to stand firm in her faith and convictions.

I pray that your angels watch over her day and night, guiding her steps and preserving her well-being. May she always feel your presence, love, and protection.

May she always keep an attitude of humility and gratefulness to you.

In the name of Jesus, I ask for these blessings and protection for my daughter. Amen.
