How PLDT Home Helped Moms Become WAHMs

7Shares

More than 20 years ago, women who got married and had children only had two options. They can become career women or housewives. When PLDT Home was introduced, a whole new gateway was opened for moms to become WAHMs. And the possibilities are now endless.

Working at home means you can keep working wherever your “home” is. And we all know that home is where the heart is. ❤

Without PLDT Home

I am part of the Gen X, the group of people who have lived unplugged for the first 20 years of their lives–give or take. Suddenly, we were thrust into the digital age and found ourselves figuring out gadgets, the internet, and how to behave on social media.

Growing up, I keenly observed grownups, especially the women in our neighborhood, my aunts, and my parents’ friends. I noticed that moms either worked in the office or stayed at home. The second group were called “housewives”.

Those who wanted to extend the family budget would put up sari-sari stores or went into direct selling. Their sidelines became the petty cash for the family’s daily expenses.

The last group are those who relied solely on their husbands’ income and spent their afternoons “sharing stories” in front of sari-sari stores because phone lines were scarce and Messenger was not even an idea yet. Usually, there was only one phone line in a community and you get party lines so talking about private affairs is like broadcasting a story to the whole neighborhood.

The Best of Both Worlds

After college, I pursued jobs related to writing and designing. During this time, internet was introduced to the Filipino consciousness and we became entangled in the world wide web (www).

Six years of working hard in the corporate world and I felt a burn out. I left my job and worked as a freelance writer and designer. My jobs were coordinated through email. Research became easier, too, as I had access to so much more data that have been published online.

Eventually, I became a mom and the desire to continue working and take care of my growing child became stronger. While my husband provided for our needs, I didn’t want my skills to dull just because I have nested. However, I am not much into direct selling and a sari-sari store is just too tedious for me.

As long as you are connected, you can work anyway — even at the airport!

The internet has solved that predicament for me and has given me a world of options. Having PLDT Home internet connection and Smart Mobile has connected me to yottabytes of information and countless opportunities online.

These developments gave moms like me the opportunity to pursue their careers while staying at home to take care of the family. That’s having the best of both worlds!

Work at Home Moms (WAHMS)

In recent years, society has coined the term work-at-home moms, or WAHMS for short. This loosely categorizes the moms who have chosen to stay at home to oversee their household while earning salaries to help in the upkeep of the home. They can have paychecks that rival or even exceed those who work in offices.

Finances can be a challenge for a modern family. A two-income household is ideal for a more comfortable lifestyle.

Furthermore, those who have entrepreneurial mindsets have also set up their own businesses online to further augment the family budget. They have set up studio sheds in order to be able to separate home life and work while at home. Life has been so much easier for so many Filipino families with several income streams.

Online Jobs for WAHMs

The internet has a wealth of opportunities for everyone, not just for moms. It’s just that mommies are often at the bottom of the hiring list in physical companies because, let’s face it, mothers instinctively prioritize their children. That maternal instinct just kicks in from the time women reach puberty. It’s nature and we can’t do anything about that.

So the internet became the go-to place for moms to find online jobs.

Many companies opt to hire online workers because they also save on operational costs, such as physical set up, infrastructure, as well as employee benefits.

But the pay is usually higher, so WAHMs like that. After all, most families are already covered by the husband’s health and retirement benefits. So a bigger salary for present needs is usually preferred.

Connectivity Improved Our Lives and Home

The connectivity that PLDT Home provides has definitely improved Filipino households. Moms have the opportunity to earn from home and still oversee their households. They can personally take care of the kids plus they also have the flexibility to work anywhere.

Working online gives mommies the flexibility to join in the family vacation and still beat a deadline.

There is such freedom in online work that jobs can be done even while you are lounging beside the pool watching the kids swim, as long as there is connectivity.

These lifestyle practices enable parents to mold children in good values while growing up. This is necessary as we raise up a next generation with the right attitude. Moreover, this is an ideal set up to nation-building, as we are raising not just children but the next leaders of our country.

  1. While it is true that PLDT has introduced many of us to the digital world, they are far from being fast and reliable. Wish they could improve their system and service to the Filipino people.

  2. Thanks Momsh Sigrid for the info. I’m currently working but have plans to be a WAHM next year to spend more time with family. Thanks for the input bout Pldt Home, will consider their plans.❤️

  5. Thank you for this information Miss Sigrid about PLDT Home. Been crowd sourcing for the best internet service provider as I am also planning to work at home once my partner decides to work abroad. That way, I can still take care of the children while I work. ?

  6. Thanks for sharing, Mommy Sigrid.

I am so happy that women who choose to stay at home are no longer limited with sari-sari store selling. With the plethora of opportunities afforded online, it is now possible for us, moms, to stay at home, travel, and earn a good amount of salary to contribute to the family income. How liberating and empowering at the same time.

Wouldn’t trade being a WAHM for any corporate job no matter how tempting some offers are. At the end of the day, being able to oversee the household (kung maka-oversee ko daw piho) and spend time with my baby and my husband matter most. <3

  7. Omg! This blog is perfect! Last Sept 25, 2019, I finally decided to shift to job where I was given a chance to work from home. My son needs me most and God is great since he leads me to this path. My company provided me all the stuff I needed and aside from the laptop is my PLDT Wifi home modem. We saved a lot since it is only 999 for 1 month! ?

  8. Internet is my virtual shop! I am able to sell and advertise and earn on the side. We have been a PLDT Home Wifi subscriber for almost 10 years now.

  9. This is so true. I am also an online worker and just thankful for the opportunity to work from home. More than benefits of connectivity, the internet has shaped our lifestyle as a family allowing me to stay at home while earning at the same time. I just pray that they will continue to improve their services to meet the increasing demands of consumers.

    1. I agree. Times are changing and the increasing demands for our workload need faster internet connection. Hopefully, we will see changes in 2020 with our PLDT Home connection. Efficiency and productivity are very much affected by the internet speed.

  10. Work-life balance is important and the internet has made that easier to attain. I’m a dog mom who works at home from time to time. Convenient jud when you have your own lined connection at home.

  11. I am a loyal PLDT customer since 2006 and having an internet at home is a big help specially when you are doing on line jobs. Having an internet has its pros and cons and it is up to us whether we maximize its good usage. Hoping that our speed will be faster just like in the other countries.

  12. I am a working mom and my project allowed me to work from home when needed. PLDT is a big help for me as I’ve got a good internet connection at home especially when we are doing skype calls and troubleshooting.

Technology is a big help for us, we just need to use it in a right way.

  13. I’m not a mom but I can so relate with the burnout and wanting to stay at home for work! That’s my ultimate goal as I age and wish to dispense with the daily commute just to work in an office.

We’re also PLDT subscribers. Since the 80’s til today, we have been satisfied with its services. And I’m also grateful that I can still connect with others with the help of the internet without fighting my way through the daily traffic. ?

  14. I am considering to be a freelancer and as of this writing, am still unsure on the ISP that I will avail. Looks like PLDT can provide all my needs should I pursue this line of work.

  15. Thanks for sharing this info, Mommy Sig.
PLDT has a lot to offer these days, especially when it comes to fastest and stable connection. Never been tried PLDT Home but I think it’s time to switch for budget friendly and fast internet connection.
