It’s still Women’s Month so let’s talk about another important topic–breast health. Aside from their function as mammary glands, many women consider their breasts as a very important part of their femininity. But as with every part of our body, they are there for more than just vanity. We also need to take care of our breast health so that they won’t create problems for us later on. Read more on how to keep the girls healthy and how Organique Acai Premium Blend can support their health.
Breast Health Assessment
To know if your breasts are healthy, Dr. Mitch Dado, an OB-GYN from De Jesus C. Delgado Memorial Hospital, emphasizes the importance of monthly breast examinations.
No need to go to the doctor’s clinic to do this. You can actually do this at home.
How to do the breast health assessment at home
- 1. Stand in front of the mirror without your top and bra off.
- 2. Use 3 fingers to check for any lumps or bumps. Start from the side, to just before your armpit and collarbone, and move around your chest.
- 3. Visually, check for any changes in breast size or shape, particularly if they are swollen, and if there are any changes in your nipples.
It is best to do this monthly breast examination after you take a bath, within 5-7 days after the first day of your period.
Maintain Breast Health
Meanwhile, here are other tips to maintain your breast health for life.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Women who are obese after menopause have a 30-60% higher risk for breast cancer. The best way to figure out if you’re at a healthy weight is to calculate your body mass index (BMI). Even if BMI is not a perfect measure, it’s much better than weight alone because it also takes height into consideration.
Exercise (Physical Activity).
Regular exercise appears to lower breast cancer risk by 10-20%. The American Cancer Society recommends 2.5 hours of physical activity a week to lower overall cancer risk. This does not mean going to the gym but increasing physical activity and incorporating movement in your daily routine.
Limit menopausal hormone therapy.
MHT (a.k.a. postmenopausal hormone therapy or hormone replacement therapy used to be a common treatment for the symptoms of menopause. However, it was discovered that MHT increases the risk of breast cancer, so it’s only recommended in very low doses for short periods of time. Or if you can totally avoid it, so much the better.
Limit alcohol intake.
Medical studies have found that for each alcoholic drink consumed per day, the relative risk of breast cancer increased by about 7%. Drinking in moderation may be okay, but try to limit your intake to less than one drink per day.
Breastfeeding.
For the new or soon-to-be, or future mothers, one more thing that can reduce breast cancer risk is breastfeeding. So you can add that among the many benefits of breastfeeding for moms.
