About Liver Diseases
The liver is a big and important organ of the body that is about the size of a football. Normally, it sits quietly under the rib cage on the right side of your abdomen. But it does heavy work. The liver is essential for digesting everything that we consume as well as getting rid of the toxic substances that we ingest.
So what can go wrong? Liver disease can be genetic, however, some problems are also be caused by a variety of factors. Some of the most common things that damage the liver are viruses, too much alcohol consumption, and obesity. The viruses that bring too much damage to the liver are Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.
If the lifestyle is not changed, damaging liver conditions can lead to scarring known as cirrhosis. This can be fatal. Early diagnoses and treatment allows the liver some time to heal. (Source)
If you can remember, I featured a Bacolod mom who helped her husband fight liver cirrhosis. Sadly, he lost the fight against the disease and he passed away a few months later. Read their story: Mom Helps Battle Hubby’s Liver Cirrhosis During Covid-19 ECQ
How to Keep the Liver Healthy
We can keep the liver healthy, even during the holidays when we are bound to have ham, lechon, quezo de bola, fruit salad, and many more! Many would also indulge in alcoholic drinks while they are on maintenance medication. All these can wreak havoc on our liver. (Source)
Perhaps the general rule about everything, which includes liver health, is to consume everything in moderation. Anything in excess is not good. So even if we eat some rich dishes during the holidays, let’s not overdo it.
Below are some other tips to keep the liver healthy.
Tips to Maintain Liver Health
The best thing to do is to keep the liver healthy is to maintain a general healthy lifestyle. Here are some things you can do.
The thing about alcohol.
Like I’ve said, anything in excess is not good. The consumption of alcohol can usually be overdone, especially if we are enjoying ourselves too much. Occasional drinking in gatherings may be alright, as long as there are no pre-existing conditions. But getting drunk regularly can hurt the liver badly.
Alcohol can cause inflammation or scarring of the liver, which can lead to cirrhosis.
Diet and Weight Management
It’s not about being skinny—it’s about keeping a healthy weight. Eating too much can lead to obesity that will put a lot of pressure on the liver. A healthy diet and physical exercise will be good.
Painkillers
Some pain medications, like acetaminophen, are toxic to the liver. Check on the painkillers you are taking.
Drink Enough Water
Water cleanses our body so make sure to hydrate. Drink at least 8 glasses of water everyday.
Avoid Inhaling Chemicals
Some of the most common cleaning items that we use at home can be harmful when inhaled and touched. Avoid them as much as you can or wear protective gear when using them. If you can change the products you use, it would be for the best.
The Effect of Coffee
While researchers are not sure why, but coffee seems to have a therapeutic effect on the liver. But I would suggest drinking pure coffee. The safest way would be to drink it brewed and black. That’s what I have in the morning.
The Adverse Effect of Some Herbs
There are herbal supplements that are not good for the liver, so be careful with what you consume. Some herbs that can reportedly cause harm to the liver cascara, chaparral, kava, comfrey, and ephedra. Ephedra is usually found in weight loss supplements.
Get Enough Rest
Sleeping gives the body time to rest from all the physical activities and mental pressure. We relieve the body from stress so it gets to heal itself. Make sure to get enough sleep.
Take Liver Supplements
There are supplements that promote liver health and one of them is Liverguard. Manufactured by Bewell Nutraceuticals Corporation, Liverguard is a proprietary formulation of Silymarin and Lecithin. Both these ingredients promote overall liver health and they have a synergistic effect when consumed together.
About Liverguard
What is Silymarin? It is a mixture of flavonolignans extracted from the milk thistle and has long been used to treat liver diseases.
On the other hand, lecithin is a kind of fat that is essential for our body processes. It can be found largely in soybeans and egg yolks.
But as with all supplements, take them with a glassful of water. The recommended dosage of Liverguard is once daily, preferably after meals.
Let’s take care our health, especially that we have little ones who are dependent on us. Enjoy responsibly.
Note: This should not be a replacement for any maintenance medications prescribed by your doctor.

Liver health is really important. These are great tips and I found them to be really helpful for me. These supplements are helpful, too. I wonder where I can get Liverguard?
Well, the liver is something I know quite a lot about. I was born with a rare liver disease (Wilson’s Disease). It caused me to have liver failure and almost lose my life in 2012 at the age of 30. A very scary time, the Drs. said I only had 24-48 hours to live and prepared my family for the worse. It took everything I had to stay awake and live and I did it for my kiddos who were 2 1/2 and 3 1/2. There was no way I was going to miss out on watching them grow up. The medical staff still refer to me as a miracle because I survived.
You cannot live without your liver, it is definitely an organ you need! I also drink two cups of black coffee a day, it DOES help filter the liver. Also, reduce fat and no added sugar and salt.
Great info!
Coffee in its purest form indeed. Thanks for sharing your story Eloise! Wow you are indeed a miracle. A mother’s love is so encompassing that the will to live is so strong. God bless you with more years with your family. Take care!
