What is HOWS Learning Online?
HOWS Learning Online is an online-based tutorial service for kids from 3 years old to 6th Grade. The mainly offer tutorial on the following subjects:
- English Reading
- Singaporean Math
HOWS Learning Online has a physical school in Seoul, South Korea where they are based. But in the Philippines, all classes are done online.
All their classes are handled by licensed or English/Math Major teachers following Multi-Level Programs. They are the first to utilize Synthetic Phonics Program and online Singapore Math.
This is a good way to augment your children’s learning, especially that we are just staying at home because of Covid-19. Their learning need not be hindered because of a lack of face-to-face interaction.
The Lessons at HOWS Learning Online
HOWS Learning Online has focused on two subjects, at least for now.
For Reading, they base their lessons on Oxford Synthetic Phonics, utilizing Oxford Ebooks. This is proven to be an effective way to learn reading by many of their clients. Testimonies include saying that their kids have learned how to read a few weeks into the program.
Since our kids do not have a problem with reading, we chose the Singapore Math. It’s not that they are not good at Math, however, they find the subject boring because their PACEs have repetitive problems. They need inspiration or perhaps a more interesting approach to Math.
With Singapore Math, HOWS Learning Online has developed their own materials based on the US common core. They are basing the lessons on the child’s readiness and knowledge on different Math topics.
Benefits of HOWS Learning Online Tutorials
We have tried the Singapore Math lessons at HOWS Learning Online. So far, the kids have each had one session and they are excited about the next lessons.
Here are the benefits of enrolling your child under the Singapore Math or Reading subjects under HOWS Online Learning.
All classes are interactive and engaging.
The teachers base their lessons on the kids’ ages. They ask about the child’s so that they have something in common aside from the lesson.
For our Shane who is 7 years old, Teacher Nicole asked for Shane’s favorite characters and song. Of course, Shane is our unicorn girl so she chose unicorns. Teacher incorporated unicorns and My Little Pony characters in the exercises.
Before the class started, she also asked Shane to sing her favorite song. It was a fun session for Shane.
Teachers come prepared.
HOWS Learning Online teachers coordinate with the parents beforehand. They ask about the child’s aptitude in the subject, whether it’s Math or Reading, as well as problem areas. I gave them a copy of my daughter’s current lessons, especially Shawna’s, so they came up with lessons based on the child’s competencies. That way, there is no redundant learning.
Teachers are bilingual.
Since the teachers are Filipinos, they can speak both in English and Filipino. Our kids main language is English, so the teachers were able to effectively discuss the lessons using this language.
Mixed courses available.
If your child has problems with both reading and Math or you just want to reinforce their learning, you can choose to have mixed sessions.
Individual tutorial or group sessions.
You can choose whether to have a private Singapore Math or reading tutorial or you can join a small group. It’s more affordable, so at least the online tutorial doesn’t make too much of a dent on the family budget.

Class Schedules and Other Requirements
Parents communicate with the teachers directly about lessons and schedules. This means that schedules are flexible but on a first-come, first-served basis. In our case, the kids are dependent also on my use of the laptop, since they do not have a laptop of their own.

Moreover, parents may request their preferred timeslot and will be accommodated as long as the slots are still available. Some teachers even accept weekend and evening classes.
The Zoom app in our classes. You can use a PC/laptop, tablet, or smartphone to join the class. PC/laptop allows the student to play more games and do more activities, though.
In our case, our kids do not have a dedicated laptop of their own for online learning. It’s not required for our homeschooling. We have to work around my schedule because I am also working at home.
Extra Materials Needed
Additional materials to be used in the class like pencils, paper, crayons, and lesson-based materials (ex. Lego blocks for SG math) will be communicated by the teacher in advance. I just gave the kids a notebook and pencil so that they can take notes if they want.
Personalized lesson plans and worksheets are included. Progress reports are given every end of the month. Furthermore, virtual certificates will also be sent after each completed level.
