Do you still remember your baby’s first word? I do. It’s not that I have written them down, but since I constantly talk about them with my husband, we can’t forget. haha Our eldest Shawna just turned 11 years old today. And I would like to commemorate her birthday by remembering hers and Shane’s first words.
Baby’s First Word is a Milestone
Many parents are excited to hear a coherent word from their baby for the first time. When they become a pre-schooler though, that’s an entirely different story.
A baby’s first word is like a glittering diamond in the middle of a vast gray mine. Imagine a whole WORD amidst all the crying and babbling, so it’s but natural that we get excited.
Moreover, it is with sincere hope that we anticipate that our babies could talk so that we can better understand what they are asking for.
We scramble to get our mobile phones and try to record our baby’s first word. But by the time we hit the record button, baby has already gone to do something else so we fail to capture that golden moment. Then you wonder if it’s really a “first word” if baby doesn’t say it again.
The next best thing is to record the moment and the word in a baby book. Or you may want to start a baby’s first year journal.
What is Your Baby’s First Word?
So what is your baby’s first word? Can you still remember them? Have you recorded them or at least written them down?
Most of the time, we mouth out Mama or Papa to our kids in order for them to get to call us. But there are those who say other words, like “Dada” or even “Jobee”, short for Jollibee. haha
Mama vs. Papa
The first two words that parents often want to hear from their newborn is Mama or Papa. Then it has become like a mini competition on who will baby call first.
This is not very appealing though, when you are deep in sleep in the middle of the night and baby calls for you yet you want your spouse to get up. It now becomes an argument on who needs to get up. hahaha
So which one is it for your baby? Papa or Mama?
Shawna’s First and Second Word
For our eldest Shawna, I only remember her first two words. And these are:
- 3 months – Mama
- 4 months – Papa
Shane’s First, Second, and Third Words
Meanwhile, I distinctly remember Shane’s first four words. Updated these because according to my Facebook post 9 years ago, her first word was not Mama. I just realized this. haha
These are:
- 6 weeks – INDI! (This is the Ilonggo word for No!)
- 2 months – Mama
- 3 months – Papa
- 4 months – Money
Oh my gosh! This kid! You can follow her adventures and witty stories on her Facebook page: Shanenanigans
Shane was exclusively breastfed for 3.5 years. I think that she really tried to learn to say “Mama” because that means Mama is food. haha She has to call me every time she is hungry so she learned the word really early.
Here’s a video of Shane talking and learning with Dad at 1 year and 3 months: https://www.facebook.com/LovinglyMama/videos/780901988618729
