Setting a Family Goal and Working Together to Achieve It

6Shares

Do you have a family goal? Have you written down your family goals list? Is it to buy a family car or build your dream house? Is it saving for a much-awaited family holiday abroad? Or is it providing for the kids’ education and getting them through university? We also have our rather ambitious family goal for the environment and it is nice that we are all together working to achieve it. Find out what it is.

Setting a Family Goal

Our lifestyle is pretty okay as a family—hubby has a small business while I accept freelance jobs here and there. I cannot say that I have a regular income because honestly, I cannot really work at regular times.

Homeschooling and taking care of the kids are eating up my day, so it is pretty hard to accept a job with a regular time schedule.

Our family goals were mainly related to family travel – the cities or countries that we would like to visit with the kids. We have established a travel savings fund that we constantly contribute to.

An Unexpected Incident in Our Neighborhood

Sometime last year, our blissful existence was shaken when the trees along the street where we live in this urban jungle were threatened. The Bacolod City council passed a resolution to remove the center islands along our streets and with that, the trees that are growing in them.

My husband had grown up in this neighbourhood and these trees are part and parcel of our everyday view around here. These are the source of our greenery and relatively fresh air around here. Since this is a commercial area, there are only buildings around here—absolutely no parks.

Sure there are some business owners like us who have their own gardens, but the trees in the center islands were the only lush foliage available.

We lobbied online for the council to spare the islands and the trees and we are thankful that they listened to us. The saving of the trees was a huge sigh of relief when the lockdown happened because of Covid-19. Otherwise, being cooped up for two months surrounded by buildings would have been bad for our mental health.

However, it seemed that a vision came to me at that time and the term Legacy Land came to mind. It would be our own space in this entire planet, a property to our name, which we will fill up with trees.

Our Family Goal: The Lo Legacy Land

Yes, our family goal has a name – it will be called the Lo Legacy Land and it’s for environmental protection. I am not sure how big the legacy land is going to be or where it will be located. It could be within Bacolod City, or in neighboring cities of Bago, Talisay, Silay, or the municipality of Murcia here in Negros Occidental.

But one thing is sure—it will be filled with trees—perennial trees and fruit-bearing trees alike. It could be an existing area with trees around or just an open space that we can fill up. That would be a fun tree-planting activity for us.

What we would like to achieve is to have our own property where we can freely grow different kinds of trees without the concern that someone might chop them down.

It will be our own little legacy in helping preserve the environment for the next generation. This is what we contribute to the Mother Earth. And the kids also have their own ideas on how to make it sustainable as well as a nice place to live.

How to Achieve Our Family Goal

One could say that our family goal is a tall dream—like a wish. But as with every big project, we have to start somewhere otherwise, it will remain just a dream. And it all starts with a single step.

If there is anything I wish for, I should have started this when I was younger. But then again, I would be a different person and I have not learned the life lessons that I needed to prepare for the future.

At present, we are selling a lot of our old stuff. It’s for the purpose of de-cluttering in order to prepare ourselves for a minimalistic lifestyle. We would need that when we build our own house in the middle of a forest. Moreover, every peso we earn from the sales goes to the fund for our family goal.

Picture this: One peso is one step towards our goal to finance the Lo Legacy Land. As long as several pesos are added to the fund every day, it means several steps are taken to reach our end goal.

Honestly, it might not sound like much, so I contribute some of my side hustles to it. Eventually, this fund pool will just grow. Still praying for God’s grace and favour for I know that eventually, we will achieve that. He is showing us ways how to work smartly in order to make our goal achievable.

Furthermore, I am also praying that there will be no more unexpected emergency expenses that will eat up the fund. We live simply as a family, so as long as we keep doing it, it won’t be long for us to achieve our goal.

When the Universe Conspires to Make Your Family Goal Achievable

When I shared our family goal on Facebook last year, I got a money contribution from a friend. It was not big but it was seed money for our goal. Somebody believed in us and had a vicarious experience with our vision.

Little Shane was so thankful to Tita Rhoda for the help that she promised to give her fruits once “our trees” in Legacy Land will start fruiting. That really made me smile because Shane really has the heart for this.

Additionally, another friend offered seedlings, in case we are ready with the land. And another one has told me that she might have a lot when we are ready to invest because she also believes in our idea of having a land where we could freely plant trees and let them grow.

I felt that these messages are affirmations for our family goal. So I guess that sometimes, it is a good thing that you share your life goal. There may be naysayers but there will be people who will agree, pray with you, and even help your cause.

Working Together as a Family Unit

What I love about having a family goal is that, we are all working towards achieving it. Our family is into environmental preservation in our own little way. We have practices at home at are aimed at this and the children are aware about not harming plants, trees, and creatures. That is why we are one heart and mind in achieving this.

Since the girls are aware about our family goal, they are also thinking of ways to increase the fund for the Legacy Land. They have agreed not to ask for unnecessary things like toys and clothes and to be happy with what they have.

Whatever it is, I encourage you to have a family goal and involve the children in planning and execution. They will be as excited as you in working towards that goal. It will give them a great deal of satisfaction to finally see the fruition of your dreams and plans.

God bless us all! May our children still have a natural environment to inherit.

Isa yan sa pinag-iipunan namin ni hubby ngaun may lupa po sila sa Bicol and we like to build a house na pede naming uwian pag summer..

    1. Moms, mas mura yata pamasahe kaysa resthouse? haha Pero nice ha, at least may lupa na kayo. Kami saving pa talaga. Dami pa kasing bayarin. 🙂 In God’s time.

  3. My dreams for my family is simple. My hubby and I been married for almost a decade.

  5. Some of us talaga na mga parents, Goal natin is makapagpa tayo nang sariling bahay, pero for me, very nice Family goals din talaga ang choice na sa may forest mag build nang house. Since nakakaganda nang Ambiance, nakaka relax, peace of mind, fresh air and safety for our kids ndin and health. Malayo sa pollution.

  6. One of my biggest dream din momsh is magkaron ng sariling bahay. Iba kasi yung may sarili kang bahay, meron kang sariling space at magagalawan. For now, nag-iipon kami and I’m really hoping na ma achieve ng fam ko na makabili kahit sariling lupa.

  7. I always wanted a log cabin, but I also wanted to live by the beach. But your post made me think back on my “younger me” dream. To build an orphanage. I wouldn’t know where to start, but wouldn’t it be nice if it was
a log cabin and built by the beach, too? ☺

That’s our family’s ultimate goal! But for now, ipon palang muna talaga. Not now, but soon. I claim it!
